St. Frances of Rome was born in 1384. She was the daughter of a wealthy nobleman, and grew up in a very worldly environment. She was once walking through the streets of Rome with her mother when she saw some beggars by the side of the road. Frances' mother called them dirty, but Frances only had love for them.
Frances was married at 12 to Lorenzo Ponziani, and they had three children together. It's said that after their wedding night, Frances wanted to join a convent, however her husband convinced her to stay with him and serve God that way.
A few years after they were married, Frances started an organization for women whose husbands were out on crusade or working as merchants in other countries. These women took vows of chastity while their husbands were away and they prayed daily for their safe return. Eventually this group became an official Third Order Franciscan group within the church, called the Oblates of Tor de' Specchi (a church in Rome).
